He’s playing Thomas Anderson’s (Neo when he’s inside the Matrix) business partner, but it seems like there’s much more to him than meets the eye. We also get a look at a grizzled veteran Jada Pinkett-Smith, who seemingly survived the Machine Wars of the first movies. Throughout the trailer, Jessica Henwick’s blue-haired character Bugs looks extremely badass, and we can’t wait to see more of her. We also get some better looks at some of the new characters. But don’t worry, Neo still knows kung fu. In this movie, they have to fight to remember, and they have to fight to get back together. The trailer seems to indicate that Neo and Trinity have been plugged back into the Matrix, and have had their memories of what happened in the original trilogy erased. The Matrix Resurrections, the fourth film in the franchise, is no longer a glitch in your fantasies its real, and the full trailer drops tomorrow. The new trailer shows scenes from the current film alongside parallel scenes from the original film trilogy from the early late'90s/early 2000s, and like Looking and Glee alum Jonathan Groff said in the first Resurrections trailer, we really are “going back to the Matrix.” Where previous trailers and clips for the upcoming sequel have left us mostly in the dark about what The Matrix: Resurrections is actually about, this new one seems to give us some hints at the plot of the movie. Thankfully, there’s a new official trailer to keep us satisfied until the movie comes out later this month! 22 in theaters and on HBO Max.As we keep moving toward the end of the year, there’s one thing on all of our minds: The Matrix. The film will also introduce new characters played by new additions to the series including Abdul-Mateen, Neil Patrick Harris ( Gone Girl), Jessica Henwick ( Game of Thrones), Jonathan Groff ( Mindhunter) and Christina Ricci ( Speed Racer). In addition to Reeves and Moss, several other stars such as Jada Pinkett Smith and Lambert Wilson are set to return, reprising their roles as Captain Niobe of the Logos and The Merovingian, respectively. That movie saw the (assumed) end of the Human-Machine war and defeat of Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving).
Written by Aleksandar Hemon, Lana Wachowski, and author David Mitchell, who previously collaborated on the Netflix sci-fi drama series Sense8, and whose 2004 novel Cloud Atlas was adapted into a 2012 feature film by Wachowski and her sister Lilly, The Matrix Resurrections takes place - again, in theory - after the events of 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions. Whatever the case, the trailer resurrects the heady, action-filled promise of The Matrix, even after all these years.
Blurring the reality further are glimpses of footage from the original trilogy projected behind characters as they run and gun to the song “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane. The official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections is jam-packed with footage of Keanu Reeves’ Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity, and gravity-defying action scenes, but what’s missing is driving. It’s possible that the movie’s “Resurrections” title could give us a clue that this new version of Neo has to be reborn, or it could be that someone entirely new needs to be resurrected. While all of this certainly sounds and looks a lot like the original Matrix movie, right down to the fight in the dojo, it’s hard to know what exactly is going on.
